I have extensive experience in interaction design, information architecture, user experience, usability and client-side development. My client list includes Symantec, Hewlett-Packard, Educational Testing Service, Fireman’s Fund Insurance, and many mid-size firms and startups.

My background includes twenty years of experience in complex, large-scale web applications, major corporate web sites and user interface software design and development both as an individual contributor, project lead and manager.

Having worked both in user experience and as a software developer/manager, I am able to effectively communicate with both Product Management and Engineering teams and bring a deeper understanding to most projects.

I strongly believe in the user as the focus in design, but I am basically a very practical person with experience in the trenches and feel I have achieved successes for companies in situations where other more pure UX experts might not.

Nearly all of my work is by referral. I often work on multiple projects for the same company because they have been pleased with past results.

Contracting/consulting engagements are each a little different and can benefit from different approaches, so I like to remain flexible to respond to the project and to the company's unique environment, process, policies and individuals.

The methodology or approach I use varies similarly depending on these factors. If a company has a well-defined process, I would expect to be asked to follow it. If not, I would suggest an approach that fits the project and organization. I like to borrow from a variety of UX experts and sources, rather than religiously follow a single approach. Regular sources include books, articles, seminars, tweets, blogs, mailing lists and conference proceedings from various leading UX practitioners.

I am very thorough, detail-oriented and dedicated. I am committed to and enjoy working as a part of the team and I earn the respect of other team members early on.

I like to be onsite whenever it is beneficial, but usually do my individual work from my home office in downtown San Francisco. I make myself available at virtually any hour, especially during "crunch" periods.
